Hermits are found in mixed woodlands all across North America, and, unlike closely related thrushes, can often be found here, during winter. History. Thrush Hermit was formed in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1992 by Joel Plaskett (vocals, guitar), Rob Benvie (vocals, guitar), Ian McGettigan (vocals, bass), and Michael Catano (drums). Catano was replaced by Cliff Gibb in 1994; Gibb in turn left the band in 1999 and was replaced by Benn Ross. They are one of the winter birds termed "half-hardy," such as the Lesser Goldfinch discussed a few weeks ago. It is indeed a huge state. 4,148 were here. They are about 6 inches long. Although it is found mostly in dense hardwood and mixed forests, young conifer forests, and forest openings, the Swainson's Thrush does not require as dense an understory as does the Veery. Hermit Thrushes are year-round residents in western Oregon.
