Humanist scholars concentrate their attention on explicating the complexities, contexts, and meanings of cultural works. A successful society depends upon altruism, charity, civility, compassion, and generosity, and the humanities evaluate and emphasize the importance of these characteristics.

While libraries and schools have always employed those with expertise in the humanities, their value is becoming evident in other industries, too. The liberal arts introduce aesthetic values to the student. Without hard and creative thinking in the humanities, the human society in which you and I find ourselves may well go mad. For a business to succeed, we can rely on technology for efficiency, but certainly not to give us human traits such as trust, honesty and integrity. These are only present through human interaction. The humanities have taught me that there is room as a future physician to contend with the issue introduced above. I spoke with my friend Dr. Mitchell B. Reiss, the President of Washington College, about the humanities and arts as an essential part of a college curriculum. As historically, socially, and politically explored through a diverse curriculum I have learned that not everyone is granted their due humanity in the society constructed around us. Look around you at the world in which we live, and try to prove me wrong. A number of my summer conversations have centered around the importance of the arts and the humanities. These are only present through human interaction. Another thing that sets the humanities apart is their penchant for critical analysis. Humanities studies also teach us about various cultures and how they have evolved over time. In contrast to the trend within the humanities, from 2000 to 2012 and as previously mentioned, graduates in the area of business administration grew both in numbers and in relevance. The humanities are the fields in which we study the meaningful ways that human beings express themselves -- literature, philosophy, art, music, poetry -- and the modes of commentary and interpretation we have developed to discuss those modalities. Critical analysis is a business skill.
The humanities provide an insightful understanding into moral, ethical, political, and ideological forces. The critical thinking skills gained from studying this subject may give you a competitive advantage in business. Never assume that the humanities are an optional extra, a bit of leisure-time fun, alongside the real hard-nosed human business of science, medicine or engineering.
